Civic Pride, Built to Last: What a School Newsroom Taught Us About Gathering Spaces

A nine-month fit-out for a student newsroom became a masterclass in flexible joinery, acoustics, and fixed-price planning. Here is what the numbers showed after year one.

A reader shared a story with us last spring that we could not stop thinking about. Her daughter had spent two years on the student newspaper at Pompano Beach High, and the staff had been producing coverage from a converted storage room: one flickering fluorescent tube, a donated laptop cart, and a wall of shelving that doubled as a desk. When the paper won a regional award, the school decided the newsroom deserved better. What followed was a nine-month fit-out that became, for our team, one of the clearest lessons in how a modest budget and a stubborn client can produce a space that outclasses projects five times its cost.

The Brief, and the First Decision Point

We were brought in during month two, after a well-meaning volunteer had already sketched a layout on graph paper. The sketch put the editor's desk in the center of the room, facing the door — a natural instinct for a newsroom, but a mistake in a 28-square-metre space with one window. We walked the room, measured the ceiling height, and asked the question we ask on every bespoke residential interiors job, even though this was commercial: who actually uses this room, and when?

The answer reshaped everything. The space needed to serve three groups on rotation — the newspaper staff after school, a broadcast club at lunch, and a photography class twice a week. That meant flexible joinery, not fixed desks. It meant acoustic separation, because a broadcast segment and a layout session cannot share open air. And it meant storage that could disappear, since the room had no back-of-house.

What We Built

Working from our own workshop, we designed a single L-shaped joinery run in birch ply, finished with a hard-wax oil rather than laminate. The run wrapped the window wall, which solved two problems at once: it freed the center of the room for movement, and it let us hang the acoustic panels directly above the broadcast corner instead of scattering them across the ceiling.

  • A 4.2-metre desk run with cable trays recessed into the underside
  • Two lockable equipment cupboards on castors, so they can be rolled against the wall during assemblies
  • A fold-down editing bench that converts to a standing counter for the photography class
  • Acoustic felt panels in three tones, installed to 1.8 metres, absorbing mid-range speech without deadening the room

Nothing here is exotic. The point was sequencing. We fabricated the joinery in one batch, which cut waste and kept the installation to three days across two school holiday windows. A fixed-price contract meant the school's fundraising committee knew its number in month three, not month seven — a detail that mattered more than any material choice.

The Obstacles Nobody Planned For

Two things went sideways. The first was the electrical supply: the room had a single circuit, and the broadcast club's lighting kit would trip it every afternoon. We rerouted two additional circuits through the corridor ceiling, a job that added four days and a surprising amount of dust. The second was more human. The newspaper staff had strong opinions about where the editor sat, and those opinions changed twice during the build. Because the desk run was modular, we moved two sections before the final fix — no rework, no extra invoice.

We mention the second obstacle because it is the one clients underrate. In a school, the users are also the stakeholders, and they turn over every year. A space designed around one cohort's habits ages badly. We deliberately left three metres of wall clear for future equipment, and specified power outlets at 1.1 metres rather than floor level so a later generation can add furniture without an electrician.

Measurable Results

Twelve months after handover, the school shared its own numbers. Newspaper output rose from six issues a year to 11. The broadcast club's segment count roughly doubled, from 14 to 27. Photography class enrolment went from 12 students to 19, which the teacher attributed mostly to the room being visible from the corridor rather than tucked behind a door marked 'Storage'.

Those are small figures in absolute terms, and we are wary of overclaiming. But they are the kind that compound. A student who learns to file copy in a room that respects the work tends to keep filing copy. Alumni coverage from the school's own archive suggests the paper has been running, in some form, for decades — and now it has a home that can carry it for another few decades without another rebuild. What We Took From It

Three lessons, stated plainly. First, flexibility is a specification, not a virtue — if you cannot name the three user groups and their schedules, you are guessing. Second, acoustics in a multi-use room are cheaper to solve at the joinery stage than after the fact; our felt panels cost less than the electrical reroute. Third, and most useful to us as a boutique design atelier, a fixed price early in the process buys something money cannot: the client's attention stays on decisions, not on the budget.

Pompano Beach High reports no fewer than 3 distinct clubs sharing that room in any given week, and the fit-out has held up without a single joinery repair through two academic years. That is the whole case for building small rooms properly. They are used harder than anyone expects.
